Offline Conversion Tracking (OCT): Training Google Ads to Find High-Ticket Buyers
Stop optimizing for cheap leads. Learn how to feed closed revenue data from your CRM back into Google Ads to train the algorithm to find actual buyers.
Most businesses set up Google Ads to optimize for "Form Submissions" or "Phone Calls." But a form submission doesn't pay your payroll. If you optimize for leads, Google's algorithm will simply go find the cheapest people willing to fill out a form—regardless of whether they have the budget to hire you.
The Problem with Standard Tracking
Imagine you run two Google Ads campaigns. Campaign A generates 10 leads at $50 each. Campaign B generates 2 leads at $250 each. Standard tracking tells Google that Campaign A is the winner, so it shifts all your budget there.
But what happens in your CRM? None of the 10 leads from Campaign A had any money. Both leads from Campaign B closed into $10,000 contracts. By optimizing for leads instead of revenue, your ad account is actively working against your business goals.
The Solution: Offline Conversion Tracking (OCT)
Offline Conversion Tracking bridges the gap between your marketing and your sales. Instead of just telling Google "Hey, someone filled out a form," OCT allows your CRM to tell Google, "Hey, that person who filled out a form 3 weeks ago just signed a $10,000 contract."
How OCT Actually Works
- Step 1: The GCLID Capture. When a user clicks your Google Ad, Google appends a unique ID to the URL (the Google Click ID, or GCLID). Your website must capture this ID and pass it into a hidden field on your lead form.
- Step 2: CRM Storage. The lead enters your CRM, and the GCLID is stored securely alongside their name, email, and phone number.
- Step 3: The Sales Process. Your sales team works the lead for days, weeks, or months.
- Step 4: The Data Push. When the sales rep moves the deal to "Closed Won" in the CRM, an automated webhook fires. It sends the GCLID and the actual deal value back to Google Ads via API.
The Result: Value-Based Bidding
Once OCT is running, you can switch your Google Ads bidding strategy from "Maximize Conversions" to "Maximize Conversion Value" or "Target ROAS" (Return on Ad Spend). You are no longer telling Google to get you leads; you are telling Google to get you revenue. The AI will analyze the complex signals of the users who actually bought and go find more people exactly like them.
