Google Ads Broad Match + Smart Bidding: How to Train the Algorithm to Find High-Intent Buyers
Exact match keywords used to be the gold standard. Today, combining broad match with value-based bidding is the secret to scaling your campaigns profitably.
If you learned Google Ads five years ago, you were taught to build massive lists of Exact Match and Phrase Match keywords. You were told to avoid Broad Match like the plague because it would waste your budget on irrelevant searches. Today, that advice is completely obsolete.
The Evolution of Broad Match
Google's AI has evolved. Broad match no longer just looks at the words in your keyword; it looks at the user's recent search history, the content of your landing page, and the overall intent behind the search.
The Power Combo: Broad Match + Smart Bidding
Broad match by itself with Manual CPC bidding is still dangerous. The magic happens when you combine Broad Match with Smart Bidding strategies like Target CPA (Cost Per Action) or Target ROAS (Return On Ad Spend).
When you use Target CPA, you are telling Google: "I am willing to pay $50 for a qualified lead." Google then uses Broad Match to cast a wide net, but it only bids aggressively on the specific searchers its AI predicts will actually convert.
How to Implement This Safely
- Start with Exact/Phrase: Build conversion data first. The algorithm needs to know what a "good" conversion looks like.
- Feed it First-Party Data: Use Offline Conversion Tracking (OCT) to pass CRM data back to Google. Tell the algorithm which leads actually turned into paying customers, not just who filled out the form.
- Layer in Broad Match: Create an experiment or slowly introduce broad match keywords into a proven campaign using Target CPA/ROAS.
- Vigilant Negative Keywords: In the first few weeks, you must monitor the Search Terms report daily and aggressively add negative keywords to guide the AI.
